Sorry for the lack of posts this month. It's actually because I've been super busy. As well as my usual English and French language stuff, in the last weeks I've had the pleasure to have had my work in Polish and Portuguese too. My work for the anthology New British Comics #3 has been translate for the Polish version...

and I did an editorial piece for Brazil's most read newspaper Folha de S.Paulo! (I'm not sure I'm allowed to show it but here's a peek)...

So things are heating up around here and I've entered the final stages of my book for the ultra amazing publisher Même Pas Mal.
The book will be a French edition of the best stuff from my previous book Swimming With Shoes On.
But as well as that, Nager Avec Des Chaussures will also have over 40 pages of new stories and art!
I will keep posting news but look out for it early 2012. Here is peek of a freshly inked page.

The UK Forests - an archive report

At the risk of turning this into a political blog, I want to post this little report I did in March this year about the coalition governments attempt to sell of the public forests.
I'm posting this because tonight I found out that the Public Bodies Bill is having it's third and final reading in the house of commons. (It's last stage of parliament-people standing around making changes before the Queen approves it and we live under it.)
Within the Public Bodies Bill was the proposal to sell the forests. The report explains more...

The bill appears to be coming in and it still affects a lot of things. It will allow the Government to close or merge 495 public bodies who deal with things like nature, legal aid, sports, arts, human rights and more.This is actually an interesting read on the process of the bill:

Westminster Bridge

I went along to the protest which blocked Westminster Bridge last weekend.
It wasn't the most exciting demonstration I must admit. Very relaxed and more like a street party.
I still stayed a while and saw some amusing stuff. These were some of them. A lot of peculiar and funny things do happen at protests.

I'm going stick a music video here which I made a little while ago. It's kind of celebrating the fact that it got a mini plug on BBC 6 radio! The lovely jubbly Marc Riley (of The Fall fame too!) played an amazing band who I've loved for a long time, Bo Ningen, I sent him a message and he surprisingly mentioned that I had made the video for the track and that I also worked with the legendary Cats In Paris! Thanks Marc.

Yes and so another fantastic festival in the French town of Montargis has passed. It was so good to see friends again and make new ones. It's always great to have people come along to have stuff scribbled in.
This year was another stunning festival of great books, great people, great food and great memories. A massive thanks to Arnaud Floc'h for creating the festival and Francois, Marie, Thomas and all the fest staff for making it special. A big thanks to all the creators too who gave me one of the warmest welcomes ever! Bring on Montargis Coince La Bulle 2012!

Was hard to pick some contents to show you because almost every panel is such an important narrative tool. These two won't give too much away. I've printed the comic in a format inspired by the Patte de Mouche collection from L'Association in France. A small, A6 size book that's nice and cheap. This is a poster I have done for the festival/fair organized by my friends at the Alternative Press collective. I can't be there but I still wanted to do something to help.

"But where will you be?" you may ask!

I am so excited and honoured to be invited back to the amazing festival Montargis Coince La Bulle 2011 which is on the same weekend.

This is the festival's 2nd year and being invited last year was not only a highlight of my 2010 but also an important event for me personally.

The Festival is the brainchild of creator Arnaud Floc’h and it takes place in the town of Montargis which is 1.5 hours south of Paris. Last years guestlist of 30+ writers and artists was stupidly great and this years is just as good. I hope to have something special prepared for the event to say thanks again. This poster and promo work is by Thomas Priou.

3 anthologies are on their way and I got some stuff in them!

First is Hive #5 from the US. They have a one page strip called Library Tales. If you've grabbed my book already, you may recognize it but it's nice to have some new people see it too. Pre-order now!

A while ago I mentioned this 5 page story and soon you'll find it in the forthcoming New British Comics #3.

Then there is the newspaper format anthology called The Sorry Entertainer which is just being edited. In it will be a brand new page by me about wrestling! I should also mention that you can find my stupid strip Benson Berner in the latest issue of Stool Pigeon music newspaper. The strip is on this blog but you get to have it in paper form and a bunch of other comics too. It's free all over the UK and other countries.

Angoulême. How it was......

If Angoulême 2011 taught me one thing, it was that there really aren’t enough hours in a day.
If it taught me two things, it was that you can get a sore throat from trying to speak French for five days.
But it is simply impossible to sum up what this event is like to experience.

For me, the event was also a chance to see my friends and fellow creators in France. But I also got to meet so many new people that now that I’m back at my desk in London, I shamefully can’t remember everyones names or where they were from. The 4 days are a little like a blur of piles of beautiful books and friendly people who welcome you into what felt like a real community of comic creators and readers.

Practically, the city is just small enough to be able to never be more than 10 minute walk from everything else.

I arrived on Weds and saw the sleepy little ville before the storm that was to come.

The next 4 days would see tens of thousands of people invade this little city and pillage it for all the comicy goodness it had to offer.
Thursday was understandably the quietest day and is considered 'Professionals' Day' because you have the best chance to go around and meet one another.
But 10am on Friday morning, the queues had begun already.

I’m struggling to really put into words all the great things that happened to me during the festival. Some hightlights included staying with my great friend Freddy Nadolny Poustochkine and the really fantastic Paul, Jonas and Matteau from Institute Posume who I also jumped around with to Britney Spears with until 3am in the morning at some strange party. Sharing a table with Scarce magazine and Tim Fish, Abbey Denson, Fred Harper and Molly Crabapple was cool as they were all really cool.

Catching up with people like Thomas Pirou, Gallium Bouzard, Giuseppe Camuncoli and more. Hanging out with my amazing French publishers Meme Pas Mal and finally meeting the whole crew and other creators like Groupil Anceique and Cha was great and so much fun.

It was a bit mind blowing to find myself amongst so many great people and I had many moments to reflect on what was actually happening.

Was it all really happening when at a 4am party, I was standing with the great Boulet to my right and the legendary Trondhiem to my left? Was I really discussing Monty Python with my heroes from Fluide Glacial? These amongst so many other things were just too cool to believe.

Was I really sitting at a table in Angoulême drawing sketches and signing books for people?

Thankfully this was all happening. And I hope to never forget it.
Many creators left on the last day but I stayed and saw the city return to it's quiet existence. Having been pillaged for 96 hours, it's little winding streets found their calmness again for another year. I learnt that is also an amazing little place which is full of creators all year round who receive grants and residencies to work on their graphic novels. Like a little BD haven.

My hugest thank yous to Xavier and Freddy because without them I may have missed all of this.

Now to get back to work!

(Oh, I must keep a promise and get everybody to go HERE!)

Again, I took a camera to an event but was too distracted to take pictures. (I've stolen this one from Shug) It was a very cool day. I caught up with people and got to know a few more. Biggest bonus was the fact that my book and new prints went down really well. My best UK event ever! Thanks to everyone who bought something. I'm pleased you liked it enough to visit here too.

There's big news from the organizers about their event next year. It will triple in size and will include international creators! Although this one had a drizzle of French with the presence of Seb Cases and a couple of French publications floating around.

I'm proud to announce that I have been invited as the 'main exhibition artist' at the first Bear Gami Zulu Christmas Zine Symposium. It's the launch event of a year long celebration of zines and small press.
So I'll be producing my first set of prints to auction and I'm sure I'll be able to have my book and other bits to sell, sign and scribble in.

The day will include a ZULU-CHRISTMAS themed print auction to raise money for the BIG Issue, featuring various London based zine creatives, a ZULU-themed workshop culminating in the printing of what is created on the day in free zine and live performance from Ouse-signed London three-piece PLEASE.

I should say that this is the first time I seriously used brush-pen in one of my drawings. I know so many people that use brush-pens and I like what they do, but I've never felt comfortable. But I gave it a serious go and mixed it up with my straight pens. I guess it turned out ok. A bit more 'Disney' than my usual stuff.
Also, remember the date because the Alt Press events are usually some of the best events on the UK 'circuit'.

Here are the first 2 pages of a new 5 page comic. The story is a little odd but I'm fairly pleased with the outcome. I just have to figure out who would like to publish a 5 page story about a freakish masseur.

Look at this bad boy! It's a Chip Mighty Mugg hand painted and beautifully crafted by my good pal Tom Gunning. I'm not sure if they are strictly available to buy but if anyone wants one, I can ask.

Montargis - Coince la Bulle festival

Wow. I'm speechless. What a weekend. So I attended my first French bande dessinée festival as a guest at the Coince La Bulle Fest in Montargis, just south of Paris. Everyone I met was absolutely amazing and my book got an amazing reception. I can't thank everybody enough for a perfect time. But biggest thankses go to Arnaud Floc'h, Thomas Priou and François Pacchioni and Xavier at Scarce magazine.
